Origin and spread
ATP is an initialism formed from the first letters of “at this point.” The full phrase is ordinary English; the shortened form developed as a compact way to write it in texts, comments, and social-media posts. It was circulating in online slang by at least June 27, 2023, when We Got This Covered described ATP as a common social-media and text-message abbreviation, and a May 17, 2026 Digital Journal article listed it among U.S. texting terms. The slang sense is unrelated to the older scientific abbreviation for adenosine triphosphate and the sports abbreviation for the Association of Tennis Professionals.
How to use it
ATP is informal and works best before a feeling, opinion, or decision: ATP I’m done arguing. Lowercase atp is common in casual messages, while uppercase ATP can be confused with biology or tennis. In a message about missed calls, ATP may instead mean “answer the phone,” so context matters.
