Meaning
An insulting slang term for a person regarded as foolish, rude, boorish, unattractive, or generally unpleasant. In online political discourse, chud often targets a stereotypically reactionary or far-right man, but the word is also used more broadly for a loser, troll, or obnoxious person.[2]

Origin and spread
Chud comes from C.H.U.D., the title of the 1984 science-fiction horror film about mutated sewer dwellers. The title is commonly expanded as “Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers,” although the film also introduces the alternate bureaucratic phrase “Contamination Hazard Urban Disposal.” The lowercase insult developed separately from the movie title’s literal monster sense and was circulating online by the early 2000s. Later accounts credit the Chapo Trap House podcast and its surrounding online communities with helping give chud a sharper political meaning in the late 2010s, particularly as an insult for right-wing or reactionary men. Its use has since broadened again, and many speakers now use it simply to mean “loser” or “jerk.”[2][3]
How to use it
Chud is plainly derogatory, though it is often delivered with exaggerated or comic contempt rather than solemn hostility. The political sense usually points to a reactionary or far-right man, but context matters: in a gaming chat or group conversation, it may be a generic insult with no political meaning. Some online communities use the word ironically or self-referentially, so it should not automatically be read as a precise political label.
