clanker
/KLANG-ker/noun
Meaning
Clanker is a derogatory, often humorous term for a robot, artificial intelligence system, chatbot, automated service, or other machine. It can suggest that the target is noisy, mechanical, impersonal, unreliable, or taking work away from humans.[2]
- 1. A robot or mechanical being, especially one imagined as noisy, crude, or made of metal.
- 2. An AI system, chatbot, or automated service that a speaker dislikes or blames for poor results, fake-seeming content, or blocking access to a human.
- 3. A fictional or game-world insult for enemy robots or droids.
Examples
“The support page sent me to a clanker again.”
“That clanker wrote three paragraphs and answered nothing.”
“Keep the clanker away from my playlist.”
“The squad loaded in and started hunting clankers.”
“If a clanker takes my job, it better at least do my taxes.”
Origin and spread
Clanker is older than its recent AI-meme use. The Historical Dictionary of Science Fiction records the robot sense in science-fiction writing by 1958, including a William Tenn description of cinematic robots; that early use is a precursor, not proof of the modern insult. The derogatory robot sense became especially recognizable through Star Wars: Republic Commando, released in 2005, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which used the word for battle droids. Online use broadened in the 2020s, with Helldivers 2 players using it for enemy Automatons by 2024 and social-media users applying it to chatbots, delivery robots, automated customer service, and AI-generated content in 2025.[2]
How to use it
Clanker is informal and usually carries mock hostility rather than literal hatred. It is common in anti-AI jokes, gaming talk, memes, and complaints about automated services. In Star Wars contexts, it points specifically to battle droids; outside that fandom, it can refer to almost any machine or AI system. Memes sometimes frame it like a human-group slur, so the word can sound sharper or more politically loaded than a simple synonym for robot.
