Meaning
As a verb, flex means to display something impressive—such as money, clothes, access, talent, or success—so other people notice it. As a noun, a flex is the boast, possession, achievement, or gesture being shown off.[2]

Origin and spread
The slang sense is a metaphorical extension of physically flexing a muscle to make strength visible. In hip-hop, flex developed shades of displaying strength, confronting rivals, and showing off. The modern slang family was circulating by 1992: an Oxford slang project cites Ice Cube’s use in “It Was a Good Day,” released on the album The Predator on November 17, 1992, though that evidence does not establish that he coined the term. Flex later broadened beyond physical power to cover conspicuous displays of money, possessions, talent, access, and achievement. Rae Sremmurd’s 2014 hit “No Flex Zone” helped carry a related phrase into wider pop culture; the duo described the zone as a place where nobody was being extra. On social media, flex also became a common noun, and the mocking response “weird flex, but OK” was notably widespread in 2018. The slang term is separate from FlexN, the Brooklyn street-dance tradition whose name has its own history.[2]
How to use it
Flex can express admiration, playful self-congratulation, or criticism of obvious boasting. Calling something a flex may praise how impressive it is, while saying someone is flexing often suggests that the display is excessive or calculated. Flex on is more competitive and can imply showing superiority over a particular person or group. Phrases such as not to flex, but are usually knowingly boastful, while weird flex, but okay mocks a boast that seems strange or unflattering.
