The modern meme sense appeared in late July 2023 as a recurring segment on the New Zealand radio show Fletch, Vaughan & Hayley. A podcast dated July 28 used the plural wording girl maths while jokingly justifying purchases, and ZM published a collection of the show's Girl Math clips on July 31. On August 8, the hosts discussed the New Zealand variation between math and maths and settled on the singular girl math, the form that spread widely through TikTok. By August 19, Fortune was reporting that the radio segment had popularized the term in July. The meme later prompted responses such as boy math and debate over whether its self-mocking humor reinforces stereotypes about women and money.[4][5]

How to use it

Girl math is usually self-deprecating or knowingly absurd, not serious financial advice. It works best when someone applies it to their own minor indulgence or shares the joke with people who recognize the format. Used earnestly to describe women's financial ability, it can sound patronizing or sexist; the underlying habits, such as mental accounting and rationalizing purchases, are not limited to women.
