gurting
/GUR-ting/verb
Meaning
Gurting means carrying out an action that is clever, inventive, or strategically effective while also being dangerously risky. The term is usually playful and describes stunts, shortcuts, improvised fixes, or meme clips where good thinking and questionable judgment appear together.[1][2]
- 1. To make a smart move that carries a substantial risk of harm, failure, or serious consequences.
- 2. To describe a person, animal, plan, or action as cleverly reckless in an informal meme caption or comment.
Examples
“He took the shortcut through the construction site. Absolutely gurting.”
“That cat is gurting again.”
“I fixed the sink with a paper clip. I was gurting.”
“Bro climbed onto the roof for a frisbee. Pure gurting behavior.”
Origin and spread
Gurting appears to have been coined as TikTok slang in early April 2025. A TikTok user identified as JDawg157 presented gurt or gurting as a new slang expression for doing something “smart but also very dangerous,” and the phrase was reported by April 28, 2025. It circulated through absurd meme posts and clips, including animal videos that framed risky behavior as either ingenious or foolish. The term is separate from the older “Gurt: Yo” yogurt wordplay, which uses gurt as a fictional name or response rather than as a word for clever risk-taking. The two forms later appeared together in meme comments, but the available record does not establish that the older joke directly created the slang sense.[1]
How to use it
Gurting is highly informal, playful, and often ironic. Use it when the danger is exaggerated or when someone is treating a questionable decision like a special skill. It can sound flippant in a serious safety discussion. Because gurt also appears in the separate “Yo, Gurt” wordplay meme, surrounding context helps clarify which meaning is intended.
