Meaning
Used informally to emphasize that a feeling, opinion, desire, or situation is strong, genuine, obvious, or openly admitted. Highkey can usually be replaced by really, seriously, very, or for real, depending on the sentence.[1][2]

- 2. Used at the beginning of a statement to signal frankness or open acknowledgment: Highkey, that was the best part.

Origin and spread
Highkey is a modern slang compound modeled on the informal adverbial use of lowkey. Merriam-Webster describes both as African American English slang associated especially with hip-hop lyrics and records the modern sense in digital writing by at least 2008. The older adjective high-key, used for bright-toned art and photography, is a separate precursor rather than the source of the modern slang meaning. By 2021, highkey had received dictionary treatment as an informal adverb meaning very, really, or intensely, and it was being documented in youth-slang guides by 2022.
How to use it
Highkey is casual, emphatic, and common in texting, social posts, group chats, and speech influenced by internet slang. It can express enthusiasm, frustration, attraction, certainty, or a blunt admission. The term has roots in African American English, so using it naturally is different from imitating an accent or performing a caricature of Black speech. In formal writing, use really, strongly, clearly, or openly instead.
