Meaning
Maxxing means aggressively optimizing or maximizing a particular part of life, such as appearance, fitness, money, sleep, or productivity. It commonly appears in compounds such as looksmaxxing, gymmaxxing, and moneymaxxing, and is often used humorously to frame an ordinary activity as an extreme self-improvement project.

Origin and spread
Maxxing grew from max, the informal clipping of maximize, and is closely related to min-maxing, a gaming strategy of concentrating resources on selected abilities or statistics. In the early 2010s, online incel and manosphere communities adapted the idea to real-life traits, with looksmaxxing—attempting to maximize physical attractiveness—becoming the most prominent early formation. The doubled x gave the form a distinctly internet-native appearance, possibly influenced by spellings such as doxxing. From there, -maxxing became a productive pattern that could attach to many nouns and describe efforts to optimize almost anything. During the 2020s, social-media users increasingly applied it outside its original subculture, often with deliberate irony.
How to use it
Maxxing is informal and frequently playful when used for ordinary activities. Compounds tied to appearance or status, including looksmaxxing and hardmaxxing, can still evoke body-image pressure, extreme self-optimization, and manosphere culture. The surrounding context determines whether the term is sincere, ironic, or critical. The single-x spelling maxing also appears, but maxxing is the more recognizable internet form.
