Meaning
In gaming, to nerf a character, weapon, ability, item, or strategy is to reduce its power or effectiveness, usually through a patch intended to improve balance. More broadly, nerf can mean to make anything less useful or impressive. As a noun, a nerf is the weakening change itself.[2]

The modern gaming sense is generally traced to player discussions around Ultima Online in the late 1990s. Ultima Online designer Raph Koster recalled that after the game reduced the power of swords, players complained that they were fighting with “Nerf swords,” comparing the weakened weapons with soft foam toys. The expression first circulated as a noun phrase such as “Nerf weapons” and then became a verb meaning “to weaken.” The available record supports circulation by February 1998 for the related noun use and July 1998 for the verb, rather than proving a single exact coinage moment. The older racing verb nerf, meaning to lightly bump another car, is a separate construction and is not the source of the modern gaming sense.[1][2]
How to use it
Nerf is informal and strongly associated with gaming, patch notes, livestreams, forums, and chat. It usually suggests a deliberate reduction made for balance, often one that players dislike, but it does not necessarily mean that something became useless. Outside gaming, the word is commonly used as a playful metaphor for any disappointing downgrade. The usual forms are nerfed, nerfing, and nerfs; the contrasting gaming term is buff.
