Meaning
A short dance or visual reaction in which someone pinches or covers their nose, waves the other hand, and bounces their knees. People perform or post the scuba to celebrate, show playful excitement, punctuate a joke, or make an intentionally silly reaction.[2]

Origin and spread
The modern scuba meme took shape in fall 2025 around rapper and creator h5wk's track Scuba Juke (It Stankkk), released on September 22, and a TikTok dance video posted in early October. The move pairs a pinched nose with a waving hand and rhythmic knee movement, and its name comes from the song and the pose's loose resemblance to holding one's nose underwater. A closely related gesture already existed in football as the Zombieland celebration, created at Western Kentucky in 2022 and later associated with quarterback Cam Ward; that earlier name and use predate the modern scuba label and should not be treated as the TikTok term's first use. Scuba spread through dance videos and sports celebrations in late 2025, then appeared in reaction memes, including animated Nick Wilde versions, in 2026. Its continued youth circulation is reflected in CensusAtSchool New Zealand's dashboard, where it accounted for 2.7 percent of recent trend responses.
How to use it
Scuba is usually lighthearted and works best as a visual callback among people who recognize the dance or audio. The gesture can also look like someone is waving away a bad smell, so it may be read as teasing or as saying that a person or performance stinks. Avoid using it to single out an unsuspecting person, particularly in flip-the-camera prank videos.
