Meaning
Shook describes being so surprised, frightened, impressed, or emotionally affected that you feel rattled or briefly speechless. It often appears in the construction “I’m shook” and may express either a sincere reaction or playful exaggeration.[2]

Origin and spread
Shook is the ordinary past tense of shake and has also been used informally as a past participle, making the slang adjective comparable to shaken or shook up. The modern frightened or rattled sense was established in New York hip-hop by 1994, when Mobb Deep recorded “Shook Ones”; the group followed it with “Shook Ones, Pt. II” in 1995. This is an early documented landmark, not proof that the group coined the usage. By 2016, “I’m shook” was widespread in social-media reactions to unexpected, exciting, or impressive moments, broadening the emphasis beyond fear. The comic variant shooketh became prominent online afterward.[1]
How to use it
Shook is emphatic and highly informal. It can describe genuine fear or distress, but posts and group-chat messages often use it as playful overstatement for surprise or admiration. Context matters: “I’m shook by that crash” sounds sincerely rattled, while “this outfit has me shook” usually signals praise. Shocked, stunned, or rattled will sound more natural in formal writing. Although often labeled Gen Z slang, the word’s hip-hop record predates Gen Z’s social-media use.
