Meaning
As a verb, unalive means to kill someone or, in reflexive use, to die by suicide; in casual contexts, it can also mean to die generally. The past participle unalived is sometimes used as an adjective meaning dead. The word is especially associated with online euphemistic or algorithm-avoiding language.[2]

Unalive combines the prefix un- with alive, but its modern slang use is not simply the older adjective meaning lacking vitality or awareness. A documented early modern-sense example appears in the 2013 Ultimate Spider-Man episode “Ultimate Deadpool,” where Deadpool uses un-alive as a child-friendly substitute for kill. The expression later circulated as online algospeak, particularly on TikTok and YouTube, where creators used it when discussing death, murder, or suicide while trying to avoid moderation, reduced reach, or demonetization. Its suicide-related social-media use increased in the early 2020s, with wider attention reported in 2022. The exact route from the 2013 television joke to later platform slang is not fully established.[2][3]
How to use it
Unalive is informal and often playful, but its subject matter may be serious. It can make a joke or fictional scene sound lighter, yet it may also feel evasive or trivializing in conversations about suicide, murder, or someone’s death. Use direct terms in emergency, medical, journalistic, memorial, and support contexts unless a platform-specific reason requires otherwise.
