Meaning
An internet emoticon made from three keyboard characters that suggests a cute, contented face, usually expressing affection, happiness, tenderness, or fondness. It can also be used as a standalone reaction, a joking description of something overly cute, or an intentionally cutesy style of expression.[1][2][4][5]

Origin and spread
Uwu is a keyboard emoticon rather than an acronym. Its three characters are commonly interpreted as two closed, happy-looking eyes around a small, curled mouth, in the tradition of upright Japanese-style emoticons known as kaomoji. The exact inventor is unknown. The earliest documented example commonly cited is from April 11, 2000, in a post by furry artist Ghislain Deslierres on the VCL furry-art site; a separate early example appeared in a 2005 anime fanfiction. Those records establish circulation, not necessarily invention. The expression spread through anime and furry communities and was visible in wider internet culture by the 2010s, with renewed attention in 2018 and 2019. The older Japanese-style emoticon tradition is a precursor to the form, not evidence that the modern slang expression was directly translated from a single Japanese word.[2][3][4]
How to use it
Uwu is highly informal and works best in texts, captions, fandom spaces, game chats, and joking social-media replies. Lowercase uwu is common, while UwU gives it a more stylized look. It can sound genuinely affectionate, deliberately childish, cloying, or sarcastic depending on context, so using it with someone unfamiliar with internet slang may make the message seem mocking or performative. Do not confuse it with owo, which more often suggests surprise, curiosity, or a wide-eyed reaction.
