Meaning
In texts, direct messages, and social-media chats, WYO means “what you on?” It asks what someone is doing, what they have planned, or whether they may be free to hang out or talk.[1]

WYO is an initialism formed from the informal question “What You On?” rather than from the more standard “What are you doing?” The phrase reflects conversational English in which “on” can refer broadly to a person’s activity, plans, intentions, or current situation. Its exact creator and first appearance are not established, but a Reddit discussion records the texting sense by 2021, and a youth text-and-chat abbreviation guide published in 2023 lists “wyo” as “what you on.” By January 2024, coverage described it as common on Snapchat and other social platforms. The initialism was also included in a May 2026 report on U.S. searches for texting abbreviations.
How to use it
WYO is informal and works best in texts, DMs, group chats, and casual comments. By itself, it usually sounds like a low-pressure check-in; “WYO tonight?” more clearly tests whether someone is free and can sometimes sound flirty. Do not use it in formal or professional writing. Because “what you on?” can also be heard as a question about someone’s intentions or possible drug use, context matters.
