DLSS 5 Off / DLSS 5 On is a side-by-side parody in which the advertised ‘on’ setting makes an image look stranger, blurrier, or conspicuously AI-generated. It turns a technical graphics announcement into a deliberately bad before-and-after.

NVIDIA announced DLSS 5 at GTC on March 16, 2026 and showed generative neural rendering through game footage including Resident Evil Requiem. Critics focused on examples that appeared to smooth faces, change details, or override an artist's intended look.

The first meme author is not known. An early widely shared Reddit version used the Wise Mystical Tree, establishing the basic convention: ‘Off’ is the trusted original and ‘On’ is an exaggerated, unwanted transformation.

The format spread through Reddit, X, Instagram, and gaming communities within days. Minecraft, game characters, cartoons, old paintings, and celebrity-like faces were all used to make the supposed upgrade look less authentic.

The joke echoed the older RTX On / RTX Off comparison format, but its target was anxiety about generative systems inventing visual information rather than merely changing light. Some examples used AI imagery to criticize AI imagery, which itself became a second layer of satire.

The surge was fast enough to provoke fatigue and stricter moderation in some communities. It endures as a rhetorical comparison, not as an objective benchmark for DLSS 5 or any individual game.
