Origin

The recognizable joke is a three-step derailment. Someone begins a serious address; the next panel reveals the other person looking unusually imposing; then the conversation is abandoned because the sight deserves a photograph. In Nick Vost’s original, that interruption lands especially cleanly because Batman and Commissioner James Gordon are established Gotham allies whose rooftop meetings, summoned through Gordon’s Bat-Signal, usually imply urgent business—not an impromptu portrait session.

Vost, who posts as @foolibuster on X and @nick.vost on Instagram, published the comic as “rooftop meeting” on May 4, 2026. Batman calls to Gordon, sees him smoking a cigar, and switches to the casual punchline that named the meme: “nahhh wait you look tuff im taking a photo.” A same-day r/batman repost credited Vost, while one commenter described Gordon’s look in the vocabulary that would follow the format: “aura.”

Spread

The earliest located public derivative arrived five days later. On May 9, @evilgnomehacker posted an “awesome deadlock edit” with direct credit to @foolibuster. A different Deadlock redraw appeared on Reddit on May 14 and linked Vost’s original rather than the earlier edit. That makes the safest family tree a pair of parallel adaptations: two creators independently recognized that the dialogue and panel rhythm could survive a complete recasting.

Metal Gear supplied the first large cross-fandom bridge in the located chronology. Kerius posted “Boss looking swag” on May 22, casting Kaz Miller as the photographer and Big Boss as the subject; an r/metalgearsolid repost followed that day, and commenters treated Miller’s behavior as fitting the characters. Meanwhile, Nine Sols, Mechagodzilla and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. redraws appeared within hours of one another. Their proximity supports a parallel redraw wave, not a demonstrated chain in which each copied the last.

By June, artists were changing more than the cast. Vost wrote on June 1 that nearly every visit to the app brought another redraw. The next day, @JoestarJokic rebuilt the joke as cave art, preserving the sequence while discarding the original comic style. On June 6, a Tenor upload converted Batman’s final beat into a reaction GIF tagged “tuff,” “aura” and “photo,” making the gag usable without drawing a new version.

The format also became a communal drawing prompt. Two separate Disco Elysium adaptations appeared on June 4, including “The last photo…,” whose creator explicitly said it was based on Vost’s comic. On June 15, another user asked the subreddit for a Disco Elysium version and received links to both finished works. By July, a Deltarune commenter reported that a franchise-specific search already produced multiple versions—the template was branching inside fandoms, not merely visiting each one once.

The long tail continued into August. Although one Instagram post described in the initial brief as an August example is actually dated June 4 by Instagram’s metadata, a verified r/RDR2 redraw appeared on August 13. It casts Dutch as the photographer and Arthur as his subject, but replaces Batman’s phone with a camera suited to Red Dead Redemption 2’s historical setting. The creator joked about arriving two months late, an admission that the format was already established even as artists kept localizing it.

Why It Works

The template leaves creators a fixed skeleton and a generous amount of freedom. The address creates expectation, the reveal supplies a visually legible pose, and the photo line breaks the scene’s seriousness with blunt admiration. Because the punchline depends on function rather than one exact drawing, cave people can replace superheroes, a historical camera can replace a phone, and two different Disco Elysium artists can produce recognizable versions without choosing the same composition. The stubbornly preserved “tuff” acts like a verbal logo, while “aura” names the quality the fictional photographer has stopped to capture.
