Meaning
In internet slang, aura is the quality that makes someone seem naturally cool, confident, impressive, or socially powerful. It can also be treated as an imaginary score that rises after a smooth or admirable moment and falls after something awkward or embarrassing.

Aura is much older than its internet-slang sense: the word comes through Latin from Greek and has long referred to a breeze, atmosphere, emanation, or distinctive quality surrounding a person or thing. According to reporting by Deutsche Welle, the contemporary usage was associated with a 2020 New York Times article about soccer player Virgil van Dijk, after which aura became common in online sports discussion, especially around soccer, basketball, and wrestling. The term’s point-based version gained broad visibility on TikTok and X by spring 2024, where users jokingly assigned enormous positive or negative scores to impressive or embarrassing moments. The usage then spread into general youth slang and was chosen as Germany’s Youth Word of the Year for 2024.
How to use it
Aura is informal and usually playful, especially in sports commentary, memes, and conversations influenced by TikTok. Saying that someone has aura is generally praise; saying they have no aura or are losing aura is often teasing or self-deprecation, though it can sound insulting outside a familiar relationship. The joke usually depends on coolness appearing effortless, so visibly trying to seem mysterious or impressive may be described as losing aura. In non-slang contexts, aura can still mean an atmosphere or distinctive quality, a supposed energy field around a person, or a sensory warning associated with conditions such as migraine or epilepsy.
