Origin and spread
The modern complimentary sense developed in African American English slang and began appearing online in the late 2010s. It is related in meaning to bad bitch, where bad signals impressive, powerful, or desirable rather than morally wrong. The term and its associated aesthetic spread through Black women’s online communities and social-media platforms including Twitter and Instagram during the 2010s, then moved into wider beauty, fashion, entertainment, and meme culture. The older villain sense is separate in meaning and was documented as early as 1872.[2]
How to use it
Baddie is generally playful, admiring, and informal. It is most natural in captions, comments, group chats, and conversations about style or confidence. Although the term is often empowering when someone uses it for themselves or for a friend, calling a stranger a baddie can sound overly focused on appearance or sexualizing, especially when the speaker ignores the person’s own preferred language.
