The exact coinage of the body-and-appetite sense is uncertain, but it was publicly circulating by February 2024 and spread widely through TikTok and other social platforms during 2024. Its visibility increased after radio personality Charlamagne Tha God used the phrase big back behavior while discussing Reesa Teesa's viral Who TF Did I Marry? series. By 2025, the term had gained enough wider recognition to appear in the American Dialect Society's word-of-the-year materials.[2]
How to use it
The phrase can be playful when people apply it to themselves or use it among close friends about food. Directed at someone else, especially a stranger or anyone being judged for their size, it commonly sounds insulting and can function as fat-shaming language. Big back behavior usually targets an action, such as ordering more food, but it can still carry the same body-based implication.
