Meaning

Bussin is an informal adjective meaning extremely good, with a particularly strong association with delicious food. It can also praise music, clothes, plans, or experiences, while the repeated form bussin bussin makes the compliment more emphatic.[2]

  1. 1. Delicious, flavorful, or especially satisfying to eat.
  2. 2. Excellent, impressive, or highly enjoyable more generally.

Examples

These wings are bussin.
That beat is bussin, no cap.
Grandma’s peach cobbler? Bussin bussin.
The new group-chat theme is actually bussin.

Origin and spread

Bussin comes from African American English and was in documented use in its current approving sense by 2002. Merriam-Webster analyzes it as probably a sound-reduced form of busting, with cluster simplification and the informal -in ending. The deeper etymology is not fully settled: Oxford’s African American English dictionary team had also considered bursting and a possible Geechee connection in 2023. The word predates TikTok, but by 2021 it was spreading widely through food videos and meme phrasing. The “Is it bussin, Janelle?” response-video wave brought it additional visibility, while the doubled form bussin bussin became a familiar intensifier.[2]

How to use it

Bussin is enthusiastic and strongly informal, fitting captions, comments, group chats, and relaxed conversation better than formal prose. Food remains its most natural context, though broader praise is well established. Because the term comes from African American English and is sometimes mislabeled simply as “Gen Z” or “TikTok” slang, avoid presenting it as a platform invention or using it as a caricature of Black speech. It may also be used ironically when the speaker clearly doubts that something is good.
