The term was publicly documented online by the mid-2010s and was notably described by journalist Michelle Lhooq in a 2019 VICE essay, where she used “Cali sober” for quitting alcohol and other drugs while continuing to use weed and psychedelics. It gained wider attention in 2021 after Demi Lovato used the phrase while discussing their recovery, though Lovato later rejected that approach in favor of complete sobriety.[2][3]
How to use it
The phrase is informal and its meaning is flexible: many speakers mean cannabis without alcohol, while others allow occasional drinking or psychedelics. Because traditional sobriety usually implies abstinence from intoxicants, the term can sound contradictory or dismissive in recovery settings. It is not a standardized medical treatment plan, and “California sober” should not be assumed to mean the same thing as abstinence-based recovery.
