Origin and spread
Borg circulated on U.S. college campuses by around 2018 and gained much wider attention through TikTok in late 2022 and early 2023. The word is commonly explained as a shortening or acronymic formation from “blackout rage gallon,” but that expansion is not firmly established and may be a later backronym. The modern slang term is unrelated to the fictional Borg of Star Trek. The drink’s individualized jug, custom flavoring, lid, and nickname helped distinguish it from communal party drinks such as jungle juice.
How to use it
Borg is informal college-party slang and is most natural in conversations about parties, TikTok, or drinking culture. It can refer either to the drink or to its jug, so context determines which meaning is intended. The name is often used playfully, but the drink may contain a large amount of alcohol; water, electrolytes, or flavoring do not make heavy drinking safe.
