Meaning
A canon event is an experience—often a bad date, embarrassing phase, poor choice, or disappointment—framed jokingly as a necessary part of someone’s personal story. People use it when looking back on a lesson or when watching someone head toward a familiar mistake and deciding not to intervene: They have to experience this one for themselves. The phrase comes from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, but online it usually means formative rather than literally unavoidable.[2][3]
- 1. A real-life, often awkward or unpleasant experience treated as part of what shaped someone: the terrible haircut was apparently a canon event.
- 2. A spectator joke about not stopping someone from making a recognizable mistake, because they may need the lesson firsthand. This is not a claim that the outcome is truly predetermined.

Examples
“Getting bangs at midnight was a canon event.”
“Do not text her ex for her; this is a canon event.”
“That awful internship was a canon event in my professional origin story.”
“I can’t interfere—it’s a canon event, but I can be here afterward.”
Origin and spread
The expression repurposes canon, fandom language for the authoritative story material of a fictional world, together with event. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse introduced canon events as experiences that must occur in a Spider-Man’s universe or that universe is endangered. The film was released on June 2, 2023, and people quickly turned its story framework into posts about their own lives. Know Your Meme documents an early viral TikTok from that day, captioned “Realizing it was never trauma, just a canon event,” while noting that it is unclear who made the first meme using the concept. Soon, posts applied the phrase to romantic fumbling and other embarrassing setbacks. The Guardian documented the related spectator format: watching someone make a terrible or embarrassing decision but being unable—or jokingly unwilling—to interfere. Older uses of canon in fandom do not by themselves establish an earlier real-life slang sense of canon event.[1][3]
How to use it
Use canon event lightly and usually retrospectively: it works for a cringe phase, a bad crush, or a lesson someone can safely learn from. It can sound dismissive if used about abuse, coercion, serious harm, or a problem someone is actively asking for help to avoid. The joke is a fictional-story frame, not a reason to deny someone’s agency or withhold needed support.
The meme adds a bystander role
A canon event is more than just “character development.” A common format casts the poster as someone watching a familiar bad choice unfold and joking that they cannot interfere. The phrase can therefore tease the situation while recognizing that advice is not always what the person needs in that moment.[3]
It can frame regret as acceptance
The Guardian quoted psychologist Caroline Moul, who described retrospective use around a negative event as potentially “a form of acceptance.” She also warned that applying the phrase to current or future choices can turn it into an excuse to surrender decision-making.[3]
Film rule versus everyday joke
In Spider-Verse, canon events are strict plot events whose avoidance threatens a universe. In ordinary online use, the phrase is much looser: a regrettable but formative personal experience, not an actual destiny.[1][2]
Questions people ask
Does canon event mean something bad had to happen?
Not necessarily. Online, it commonly frames an unpleasant or embarrassing experience as formative, but it is usually humorous storytelling rather than a serious claim that the event was unavoidable or beneficial.[2][3]
Why do people say “I can’t interfere—it’s a canon event”?
It refers to the TikTok format in which an observer sees someone making a recognizable mistake and jokingly treats the lesson as one the person must learn firsthand. In real situations involving danger or requested help, the joke can be insensitive.[3][2]
