Meaning
A person who resembles someone else but is jokingly described as a less attractive, less polished, or lower-budget version. The term is usually aimed at people, especially celebrity lookalikes, but can be extended humorously to an inferior copy of a character, design, or object.[2][3]

Origin and spread
Choppelganger is a blend of chopped, internet slang for someone considered unattractive, and doppelgänger, a word for a double or lookalike. The earliest documented use in this modern slang sense is a May 20, 2025, X post by @2seatlimousine, who described it as a word for someone who looks like another person “very slightly and subtly worse.” The term later circulated more widely through TikTok and X, including a December 20, 2025, TikTok that helped bring it to a larger audience. The older German-derived word doppelgänger is a precursor to the form, not an earlier use of this insulting slang sense.[3]
How to use it
Choppelganger is informal, appearance-focused, and usually mocking. It can work as self-deprecation or friendly teasing, but calling a stranger a choppelganger will normally sound insulting. The spelling choppleganger also appears, though choppelganger is the form documented in the earliest widely cited example.
