Meaning
A clapback is a quick, pointed comeback to an insult, criticism, or dismissive remark. It usually carries more bite than an ordinary reply and may be delivered publicly for an audience, especially in a comment section, group chat, interview, song, or social media post.[3]

Origin and spread
Clapback is a compound noun formed from the phrasal verb clap back. The modern expression has strong roots in hip-hop, where clapping back invoked the idea of returning fire after an attack. Ja Rule recorded a prominent early example in his 2003 diss track “Clap Back,” which he later described as a response created during an active rap beef. That gunfire-related image became increasingly figurative: the return shot was a lyric, retort, or public reply rather than a bullet. The closed noun clapback was clearly circulating in online pop-culture commentary by 2015, when it was used for targeted social media comebacks. Academic writing later documented the term in discussions of responses to trolling, offensive comments, and provocative brand interactions online.
How to use it
Clapback often sounds admiring because it credits a response with confidence, timing, or wit, but it can also imply pettiness or unnecessary aggression. Calling something a clapback suggests more than disagreement: the response is meant to reverse the embarrassment or put the original critic in check, often before an audience. Its history in hip-hop and Black digital discourse gives it more cultural specificity than neutral words such as response or rebuttal. In formal or low-conflict settings, those neutral alternatives may be clearer.
