Meaning
A cryptid is an animal whose existence has been claimed or suspected but has not been scientifically confirmed. The word traditionally applies to creatures such as Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and the chupacabra, but popular and internet usage also extends it to fictional monsters, eerie sightings, elusive pets, strange people, and other unexplained subjects treated as modern folklore.

Origin and spread
Cryptid was coined in cryptozoological vocabulary from crypt- in crypto- and the suffix -id. The International Cryptozoology Museum identifies John E. Wall of Manitoba as the person who introduced the term in a letter published in the Summer 1983 issue of the International Society of Cryptozoology Newsletter. Its early meaning concerned hidden or unknown animals of interest to cryptozoology. A 2026 study of contemporary legend records the term's appearance in David George Gordon's 1992 Field Guide to the Sasquatch and describes its later expansion into a catch-all label for mysterious things that may be real or entirely fictional. The modern internet use is therefore a later broadening of the zoological term, not a separate coinage.
How to use it
Use cryptid literally for an unverified animal and figuratively for a strange, elusive, or hard-to-explain figure. The figurative use is usually playful, spooky, or affectionate in captions, group chats, memes, and folklore communities. A cryptid does not have to be supernatural; uncertainty, concealment, or lack of proof is the central idea. When discussing culturally specific traditional beings, use their established names and context rather than flattening them into a generic internet-monster label.
