Meaning

GRWM is an initialism for “get ready with me.” It labels a social-media video in which someone films themselves preparing for the day, an event, bed, or another activity, often while applying makeup, styling their hair, choosing an outfit, reviewing products, or telling a story.[2][3]

Origin and spread

GRWM is formed from the initial letters of “get ready with me.” The social-video label emerged from early YouTube beauty culture: Shaaanxo uploaded a video titled “Get Ready With Me :)” on January 14, 2011, documenting the expanded phrase as a format name but not necessarily the four-letter shortening. A 2021 study of beauty-video titles found the construction in its sample by November 2011, described the genre as arising around 2012, and noted that abbreviated titles appeared later and became more common. The person who first shortened the phrase to GRWM is not established. Regular uploads developed during the early 2010s, and the format later flourished in shorter, more conversational forms on TikTok and other social-video platforms. It also expanded beyond beauty instruction into outfit selection, personal stories, comedy, promotions, and serious commentary.[2]

How to use it

Use GRWM in captions, hashtags, video titles, and casual discussion of social content. The letters are usually pronounced individually, and “GRWM for…” names the occasion or goal. Depending on the post, the tone may be cozy, aspirational, promotional, chaotic, ironic, or serious. A GRWM is not automatically a tutorial: the preparation may simply provide a visual backdrop for a story. Outside beauty, fashion, and creator communities, spell out “get ready with me” on first mention to avoid confusion.
