IYKYK is an informal initialism of “if you know, you know.” It is added to a post, caption, message, or comment when the writer expects people with the right background, memory, or cultural knowledge to understand the point without an explanation.

Origin and spread
IYKYK is formed from the initial letters of “if you know, you know.” The available record places the abbreviation in social-media use by at least 2009, while a December 4, 2016 user-submitted entry provides a clear early written record of the modern shorthand. The phrase also appeared as the title of Pusha T’s 2018 song “If You Know You Know,” but that song is a separate cultural use and does not establish the song as the acronym’s source. The abbreviation became especially visible in hashtag-driven online culture during the late 2010s and 2020s.[2]
How to use it
IYKYK is casual and usually carries a knowing, conspiratorial, or playful tone. It works best when the intended audience genuinely shares the relevant context. Used with no recognizable clue, it can sound like empty posturing; used around sensitive information, it may feel intentionally exclusionary. The term is usually typed in uppercase, though lowercase “iykyk” is common online.
