Meaning

An informal collective term for a group of men or boys, especially the speaker’s own friends, associates, or crew. In some street contexts, mandem can refer more specifically to members of a local group or gang.[1]

Origin and spread

Mandem comes from Jamaican Creole man-dem, in which postposed -dem marks a plural or group and man-dem means “the men.” The expression entered British speech through Caribbean communities and became established in Multicultural London English, where it often narrowed from men generally to the speaker’s male friends or associates. Its precise first British use is uncertain, but it was circulating in London’s grime and club culture by April 2005. By 2007, Ruff Sqwad had used it in the track title “Ruff Sqwad Mandem,” reflecting its place in grime vocabulary. Music, social media, and wider interest in British urban speech subsequently carried it beyond London and the UK.

How to use it

Mandem is normally collective and takes a plural verb: the mandem are here, not the mandem is here. It commonly appears after the, my, or a possessive phrase and does not usually name one individual. The term is strongly associated with Jamaican-influenced British speech and Multicultural London English. It can sound warm and inclusive among friends, but an exaggerated imitation of a “roadman” persona may come across as forced or mocking. Although mandem can describe gang associates in street-related contexts, it does not inherently mean a gang.
