Meaning
In fandom, an OTP is the romantic pairing a person supports or enjoys most strongly, often above other possible pairings. The couple may be officially together in the source material, imagined by fans, or drawn from real-world celebrities in a fandom context.
- 1. A fan’s favorite romantic pairing within a particular fictional fandom.
- 2. A preferred ship that may be noncanonical, meaning the source material does not make the characters a couple.
- 3. A favorite pairing involving real people, especially celebrities, when discussed as part of fan culture or real-person fiction.
- 4. A playful label for the couple someone is most emotionally invested in, even when they also enjoy other ships.

Origin and spread
OTP is an initialism of one true pairing. Fan-studies scholarship places the concept in fanzine culture by the mid-1980s, where it was tied to fans’ preference for particular romantic pairings and later to shipping. The available record supports circulation in fan communities rather than a single known inventor or an exact first use. As fan fiction and online fandom expanded through forums, LiveJournal, Tumblr, and archive sites, OTP became a familiar label for a fan’s preferred ship. In casual modern use, the phrase can be less absolute than its wording suggests: a person may call several pairings an OTP, usually one per fandom or at different points in their fandom life.
How to use it
OTP is informal and most natural in fandom discussions, fan fiction, edits, memes, and social-media posts. It usually refers to fictional characters, but fans may also use it for celebrity pairings; that use describes a fan’s preferred pairing and does not establish that the real people are romantically involved. In work, finance, or cybersecurity contexts, OTP commonly means one-time password instead, so context matters.
