Meaning
A man accused of adopting sensitive, feminist, emotionally aware, or traditionally feminine-coded interests as a calculated performance rather than from genuine conviction or enjoyment. The label is usually aimed at men who use things such as feminist books, matcha, tote bags, therapy language, indie music, or a carefully styled appearance to seem safe, enlightened, interesting, or attractive to women.[2][3]

Its modern slang sense describes a man who stages a progressive, gentle, stylish, or emotionally literate persona for social or romantic approval. The phrase circulated widely on TikTok and other social platforms in 2025, where memes assembled a recognizable checklist of matcha drinks, feminist books, tote bags, wired earbuds, women artists, and deliberately soft styling. Coverage in August 2025 described the archetype as a new online phenomenon, while public performative-male contests soon turned the stereotype into an explicitly self-aware parody. The term is related to earlier figures such as the softboy and male manipulator, but it is not simply a renamed version of either one.
How to use it
Performative male is informal, mocking, and usually dismissive. It can be used seriously to question whether someone's public values match his private behavior, but online it is often an exaggerated joke. The label does not prove that a man is insincere: liking matcha, reading feminist writers, painting one's nails, or listening to women musicians is not by itself performative. Used carelessly, the term can shame men for interests or styles that fall outside conventional masculinity.
