Meaning
Plot armor is the often-unseen protection a fictional character receives from the demands of the story, allowing them to survive, escape, or succeed despite circumstances that would normally defeat them. The term is usually criticism: it suggests that the character was saved by narrative necessity rather than by a convincing decision, skill, established rule, or believable coincidence.

- 2. An implausible survival, escape, victory, or recovery that appears to happen only because the plot requires the character to continue.

Origin and spread
Plot armor is a metaphorical compound of plot and armor: the character is figuratively protected by the story in the same way armor protects a body. Merriam-Webster gives 2002 as the first known use in the modern sense. The expression circulated in online fiction and fandom discussions before becoming a common criticism of movies, television, novels, anime, comics, and video games. Older stories may contain the same narrative pattern, but those examples are not evidence that the modern phrase was used at the time.[1]
How to use it
Plot armor is usually informal and mildly mocking, especially in fan discussions and media criticism. It does not mean that every protagonist who survives danger has plot armor; the accusation is strongest when the survival ignores the story's established rules, erases meaningful consequences, or depends on an unexplained rescue. In genres where extraordinary survival is expected, the phrase may be playful rather than severe.
