Meaning
Son is an informal reaction roughly meaning “are you serious?” or “what am I looking at?” It usually responds to something ridiculous, embarrassing, or unexpectedly funny, with mock disappointment rather than genuine anger. Online, it commonly appears beside repeated crying emojis or in the longer phrase “son, I’m crine.”

Origin and spread
The ordinary word “son” and its older use as a form of address long predate this reaction; those senses are not the modern meme usage dated here. The earliest located trace of the newer format is a now-deleted Reddit comment from September 8, 2025, associated with an edited image of actor Anthony Mackie smirking and the caption “Son” followed by crying emojis. Because the comment is deleted and the image appears to have arrived from elsewhere, it does not establish a creator. By November 2025, surviving Reddit posts were combining “son,” long emoji strings, and “I’m crine,” turning the address into a compact reaction for laughing disbelief. The format continued spreading through videos, image collections, and wordplay variants such as “sonion” in 2026. It also reached New Zealand students: CensusAtSchool’s live dashboard ranked “Son” fourth among its last-month trending-word responses at 3.3% when checked in September 2026.[3]
How to use it
Use “son” where exaggerated disbelief and friendly roasting will be understood, especially in meme-heavy comments or group chats. Crying emojis make the amused tone clearer. Without that context, addressing someone as “son” can sound parental, condescending, or confrontational, particularly if the speaker is not close to the person. Capitalization is flexible, while all caps adds theatrical emphasis.
