Complex reported that Chicago videographer Duan Gaines encountered the word while working with Chief Keef and that he helped spread it on social media; the same account identifies Katie Got Bandz’s music as an early source of popularization. The term then moved through rap lyrics, hashtags, memes, and mainstream entertainment. Some early explanations use “that ho out there,” so the expansion should not be treated as a fully settled backronym.[2]

Thot is strongly insulting, sexist, and often misogynistic when directed at someone else.
