Peanut Butter Jelly Time

Peanut Butter Jelly Time is a short Flash loop: a smiling banana with maracas dances while the Buckwheat Boyz chant the title phrase and ask “where he at?” The song came first; the internet made the banana inseparable from it.

Ryan Gancenia Etrata and Kevin Flynn, posting as RalphWiggum and Comrade Flynn, assembled the animation for the Offtopic forums in early 2002. The exact forum day is not preserved, so 2002 is the responsible first-seen date. On March 21, Newgrounds user YrebWarts reposted the clip and exposed it to the Flash portal's remix culture.

By November 2002, NBC sitcom Ed showed a character watching the animation. During 2003 it circulated through eBaum's World, Something Awful and Albino Blacksheep—the humor sites and boards that carried viral video before YouTube.

YTMND users built scores of audio-visual variations in 2004. The decisive mainstream afterlife arrived on November 20, 2005, when Brian performed the song in a banana suit with maracas on Family Guy. That version introduced viewers who had never seen the original Flash file and triggered a new search peak.

YouTube then preserved the loop through uploads, ten-hour versions and mashups. Even after browser support for Flash ended, the banana remained a compact emblem of early-web repetition: loud, pointless, endlessly remixable and impossible to forget.

The loop has almost no setup and no ending. A simple dance, a bright silhouette and a chant built from repetition make it readable at any point—and make stopping after one play strangely difficult.

Use it for chaotic celebration, an intentionally annoying earworm, early-2000s nostalgia or any moment improved by a dancing banana for no defensible reason.
