Meaning

A short fan-made video focused on one person or character, usually assembled from clips, set to music, and enhanced with cuts, effects, captions, or transitions. In its earlier and still common K-pop sense, a fancam is a fan-recorded or performer-focused video of one idol during a live performance.[2][3][4][5]

Origin and spread

Fancam is a compound of fan and cam, a shortening of camera. The term developed in K-pop fandom for videos recorded by fans or focused on a single idol during a performance; a 2012 fan-community post already used fancam for a performance video. The term gained wider attention after a 2014 video of EXID member Hani performing “Up & Down” went viral and helped revive interest in the song. By around 2019, English-speaking social-media users had broadened fancam to include edited montages made from film, television, music-video, and animation footage, even when the source material was not filmed by a fan.[2][3][4]

How to use it

In K-pop contexts, fancam can imply a relatively continuous performance recording that follows one member. On TikTok, X, Instagram, and similar platforms, it more often means a short, stylized fan edit. The broader sense is widely understood online, but some K-pop fans reserve fancam for performance footage and call edited character montages edits or fanvids instead.
