The modern slang sense is tied to Eminem's 2000 song “Stan,” whose fictional title character is an obsessively devoted fan writing increasingly desperate letters to the rapper's alter ego, Slim Shady. The name later became a general noun for an extreme fan; rapper Nas used it that way in his 2001 diss track “Ether.” The term spread more broadly through online fandom in the 2010s. It is often explained as a blend of “stalker” and “fan,” but that formation is not established as Eminem's intention; a 2025 account quoting his former manager says the name was chosen because it rhymed with “fan.”
How to use it
Stan is informal and can be affectionate, self-applied, teasing, or critical. Fans may use it proudly to mean “I support this enthusiastically,” while critics may use it to suggest blind loyalty or hostile behavior. It is stronger than simply being a fan, but the exact level of obsession depends on context.
