Meaning
As a noun, simp refers to a person who gives someone excessive attention, praise, money, or loyalty, especially without receiving comparable affection in return. As a verb, to simp or simp for someone means to behave this way. The word can be teasing, self-deprecating, affectionate, or openly insulting, depending on context.[1]

Origin and spread
Simp has an older informal sense meaning a fool or simpleton, generally treated as a shortening of simpleton. The romantic sense has a less certain history: Merriam-Webster records a Brown University slang-study citation from 1967–68 for being excessively submissive to a girlfriend, and notes that the term appeared in hip-hop and R&B contexts during the 1980s before becoming established in the early 1990s. Its broad internet circulation accelerated in the late 2010s and around 2019–20, especially across platforms such as TikTok, Twitch, and Twitter. The modern romantic sense should not be confused with every earlier use of simp to mean merely foolish.
How to use it
Simp is informal and often carries a mocking or disparaging tone. It may be used playfully by someone describing their own intense admiration, but directed at another person it can accuse them of lacking self-respect or being too eager for romantic approval. Online, the term is also used more loosely for enthusiastic support of celebrities, streamers, fictional characters, or brands. Calling ordinary kindness or respectful behavior simping can make the speaker sound hostile or reductive, and the term has often been aimed more at men than women in romantic contexts.
