FWB is an initialism for “friends with benefits,” meaning a friendship that also includes consensual sexual activity without the expectations or status of a committed romantic relationship. It can refer to the arrangement itself or to one of the people involved.[3]

FWB shortens the phrase “friends with benefits.” The full phrase appears in Alanis Morissette’s 1995 song “Head Over Feet,” although that lyric describes a loving best friend and does not clearly express the modern casual-sex meaning. Academic writing was using FWB as a relationship label by the mid-2000s, and the initialism was listed among texting abbreviations by 2012. The phrase also gained broader mainstream visibility through the 2011 film Friends with Benefits, but that film did not create the expression.[5]
How to use it
FWB is informal, adult relationship language and is common in texting, dating profiles, and online conversation. The term suggests an ongoing friendship plus sex, not merely a one-time hookup, although people use it inconsistently. Because expectations about exclusivity, romance, and emotional involvement vary, the label should not replace a clear conversation about boundaries and consent.
