A positive trait, action, or signal that suggests a person, relationship, situation, or choice is healthy and likely to work out. In dating and friendship talk, a green flag is a quality that encourages trust or continued interest, often contrasted with a red flag.[2]

The earliest documented relationship example identified by Psychology Today is a July 2013 Reddit post titled “Ladies, What Are Your ‘Green Flags’?” The expression appeared in later relationship writing, including a Psychology Today article from April 2019, and became more common in online dating and relationship discussions around the early 2020s.
How to use it
Green flag is informal and usually approving, especially in dating, friendship, and social-media conversations. It can describe one specific behavior—They remembered my coffee order was a green flag—or a person more generally—She’s a green flag. The phrase signals encouragement, not proof that someone or something is perfect, so using it too confidently after one charming moment can sound joking or overly online.
