Meaning

A Karen is a person—traditionally, and most often, a white or middle-aged woman—who is perceived as entitled, self-important, rude, or eager to involve a manager or authority figure over a minor dispute. The term can also refer to someone accused of using racial or social privilege to police other people or make hostile complaints. Karen is sometimes used attributively, as in a Karen move.[1][2]

1. A demanding customer or neighbor who makes an exaggerated complaint and insists on speaking to a manager or another authority figure.
2. A person, especially a white woman, accused of weaponizing privilege by reporting, confronting, or policing people from marginalized groups.
3. A broader insult for someone acting self-righteous, obnoxious, controlling, or aggressively entitled, even when the person does not fit the original stereotype.
4. An attributive modifier describing behavior, content, or an action considered needlessly demanding or self-important, as in a Karen complaint.

Origin and spread

Karen is a genericized use of the female given name, whose popularity in the United States peaked around the mid-1960s. Evidence for humorous generic use of Karen reaches back to the early 2000s, but the modern internet stereotype developed through several overlapping streams rather than one confirmed origin. The manager-demanding version circulated online by the mid-to-late 2010s and spread widely in memes around 2018. The label also developed in African American English and became strongly associated with viral incidents in which white women were accused of making racist complaints or invoking police authority against people of color. The term's history is therefore best described as layered and partly uncertain, not as the invention of one particular person or post.[2]

How to use it

Karen is informal and usually derogatory, though people sometimes use it jokingly about themselves or friends. It is most precise when aimed at a pattern of entitled, hostile, or discriminatory behavior—not merely at a woman who complains, asks for help, or expresses anger. Because the label is gendered and has racialized associations, using it for an ordinary disagreement can sound sexist, dismissive, or evasive about the actual issue. The word is also increasingly applied to men and to people outside the original age, race, and gender stereotype.
