Among Us — Sus

“Sus” is a clipped form of “suspicious.” Players used it in Among Us chats to flag somebody they thought might be the impostor, and the word soon escaped the game as a joking all-purpose accusation.

The word did not begin with Among Us: it had circulated in speech and online slang beforehand. Its huge meme life began during the game’s 2020 resurgence, when its short, instantly legible form fit rapid-fire emergency meetings and screenshots.

The earliest documented Among Us-specific meme use is not settled. One widely circulated early Twitter example appeared on September 6, 2020, using the now-familiar “you seem kinda sus” wording; that makes 2020? the supported first-seen year for the meme rather than for the older slang.

As Among Us streams, clips and fan art surged in late 2020, “sus” became the game’s portable punchline. It worked both inside a match and outside it: any strange object, awkward sentence or person could suddenly be treated as evidence.

The format kept mutating into “sussy,” “sussy baka,” “amogus” and “when the imposter is sus.” It also fed the later “Among Us everywhere” joke, where ordinary shapes were framed as crewmates.

That flexibility is why the word survived the peak of the game. “Sus” can still signal mock suspicion without explaining the reference, while the crewmate silhouette supplies the visual shorthand.
