Distracted Boyfriend

Distracted Boyfriend is an object-labeling meme about dropping an existing priority for a shinier, riskier or simply newer option. Its source is a stock photograph shot by Barcelona photographer Antonio Guillem in Girona, Spain, in mid-2015, with models known publicly by the stage names Mario and Laura.

Guillem staged the session as a playful take on infidelity. Stock agencies listed the frame as “Disloyal man walking with his girlfriend and looking amazed at another seductive girl,” but the picture did not become a meme until January 2017. The earliest use preserved by contemporary reporting appeared in a Turkish progressive-rock Facebook group: Phil Collins, labeled as the boyfriend, turns from progressive rock toward pop music. The source set supports January 2017, not a responsible exact day.

The photographer and models learned about the meme from people posting it to their social accounts. Guillem later said most remixes were unlicensed and brought him no meaningful profit, though he treated good-faith meme use differently from derogatory commercial use.

The prog-rock joke was reposted to an English-language Facebook page and reached Twitter by February 2. Later that month, an Instagram post of the unlabelled photo drew nearly 30,000 likes, proving that the expressions could carry the setup even before every role had text.

The breakout arrived on August 19, 2017, when an X/Twitter version showed “the youth” turning from “capitalism” toward “socialism.” A copy passed 35,000 reposts and nearly 100,000 likes, and the format spread across Twitter, Reddit and Facebook. The stable grammar was now obvious: the boyfriend is the chooser, the girlfriend is the neglected commitment, and the woman in red is the tempting alternative.

People quickly mined Guillem’s wider stock-photo series for prequels, sequels and alternate endings, then rebuilt the triangle with other actors, paintings and movie stills. That made Distracted Boyfriend more than one image: it became a reusable diagram for attention moving from A to B.

By 2018 the image had escaped ordinary meme feeds. It appeared on a National School Walkout protest sign, won the Meme category at the 10th Shorty Awards, and triggered a ruling from Sweden’s advertising ombudsman after an ISP used the women as interchangeable job choices. In 2019, the New York Times business desk used the format for Renault’s interest in Fiat Chrysler while tied to Nissan, and Hungary’s family-policy campaign was mocked for featuring two of the same models.

The photograph reads like a complete comic strip in one frame. Three exaggerated expressions establish desire, betrayal and consequence, while three labels can map that tiny drama onto politics, technology, work or a private bad habit.

Use it when a person, company or group neglects a familiar obligation for a seductive new option—especially when the choice looks impulsive, hypocritical or likely to age badly.
