Roll Safe is the reaction image of actor Kayode Ewumi, as Reece Simpson, tapping his temple with a knowing grin. The frame comes from “Happy Belated,” a BBC Three version of Ewumi and Tyrell Williams's mockumentary series #HoodDocumentary, published in June 2016.

Reece—whose stage name is Roll Safe—had already appeared in Ewumi's 2015 Vine and YouTube sketches. In the scene, he praises Rachel for having “good brains,” makes the joke explicit with the gesture, and supplies the smug expression that later became the template.

The earliest meme use supported here is a November 15, 2016 post by British account @FootyHumor, which used the screenshot as a reaction to deliberately starting an argument. On January 22, 2017, @trapafasa paired it with a Valentine's-season joke; the next day, @RyanWindoww posted “You can't be broke if you don't check your bank account,” reaching about 74,000 likes and 47,000 retweets in a week.

That faulty “You can't X if you don't Y” logic became the format. Black Twitter rapidly produced versions about relationships, lateness, jobs and money; Reddit's r/BlackPeopleTwitter and r/MemeEconomy carried the image further in early February while press coverage gave it a name.

Roll Safe finished 2017 on major year-end lists and became a Shorty Awards finalist. The template outlived its first wave because the same gesture can sell almost any bad decision as a brilliant loophole.

The face and finger promise intelligence before the caption reveals the opposite. That instant contradiction makes even a one-line bad idea readable as a complete joke.
