Expanding Brain

Expanding Brain—also called Galaxy Brain—is a multi-panel image macro in which each step appears more illuminated, cosmic and supposedly intelligent than the last. The joke is usually backwards: the final, glowing idea is often the most needlessly elaborate or plainly ridiculous one.

The format is tied to the 2017 Reddit wave of "who / whom / whomst" jokes. An early widely circulated version, posted in late January 2017, paired increasingly overcooked versions of the word with progressively larger brains. The precise first upload is difficult to preserve, so the appearance date is recorded as January 2017?.

The visual grammar made the template unusually portable. Four rungs establish a tiny argument—ordinary choice, cleverer choice, overthinking, cosmic nonsense—before the last panel delivers the reversal.

During 2017 the template moved beyond grammar jokes into gaming, work, politics, fandom and everyday advice. Creators replaced the words rather than the layout, using the glow as a fake score for sophistication.

Later versions added more panels or abandoned anatomy altogether: halos, galaxies and omniscient silhouettes became ways to make the escalation deliberately excessive. That flexibility is why the format survives both as praise and as a deadpan way to call an idea unserious.
