Left Exit 12 Off Ramp is an object-labeling meme built around a blue car making a wildly late turn toward a freeway exit. The straight lane represents the sensible or expected option, the ramp represents a tempting alternative, and the car identifies the person or group abandoning the first choice.
The car came from Fredrik Sørlie’s video “How to exit freeway like a boss,” uploaded on July 4, 2013. Filmed in Lørenskog, Norway, it shows a Toyota Cressida drifting onto an off-ramp. The familiar overhead sign is absent from the footage: the meme image is a later composite, which explains the visual joke of a sign marked “Left Exit 12” hanging above a ramp on the right.

The earliest supported meme use appeared on December 29, 2017, when HiddenLOL user anon90 posted a labeled version and offered the template in the comments. It contrasted remaining a stable first-world country with uncontrolled migration, using a Swedish flag on the car. The politics were specific, but the grammar was instantly reusable: two choices, one vehicle and an absurdly forceful decision.

A Reddit repost by Throwthowk helped carry the format into meme communities. On the same day, a dark-humor version on HUGELOL labeled the car “me” and made the exit a self-destructive choice. Those early copies established that the ramp could represent either a genuine preference or a deliberately terrible impulse.
On December 31, Reddit user Laughing_Fish adapted it for New Year’s resolutions: the main road promised self-improvement, while the exit offered another year of posting memes. The post gained more than 18,600 points in four days according to contemporary tracking, giving the composite its first large amplification node. An Imgur version on January 1, 2018 contrasted “new year new me” with “same shit different year.”
The format endured because motion does most of the punchline. A simple two-column comparison says which option wins; the smoking tires add panic, appetite and bad judgment. Later versions applied that energy to fandoms, school, work, games and current events, while blank templates let creators swap labels without redrawing anything.
Left Exit 12 also belongs to the late-2010s wave of object-labeling images, alongside distracted people, buttons and branching choices. Its special contribution is timing: the car has apparently noticed the preferred option at the last possible second. That makes the image useful whenever a decision feels less like calm reasoning and more like an emergency swerve.
