Origin

Ermahgerd is an image macro and catchphrase for overwhelming, slightly dorky excitement. Its central photo shows Maggie Goldenberger as a child, wearing pigtails and a retainer while clutching Goosebumps books; captions rewrite ordinary English as breathless retainer-speech, most famously ‘Gersberms / Mah fravrit berks.’

The photograph was not a candid picture of an awkward reader. Goldenberger and friends staged it during a childhood dress-up session: she chose an oversized vest, made an intentionally extreme face and put in a retainer she rarely wore. The Polaroid later reached Myspace and Facebook before a teenager found it and posted it to Reddit’s r/funny on March 14, 2012 as ‘Just a book owners smile…’. The exact childhood shooting date is not documented, so MemePulse dates the meme itself to that supported Reddit appearance.

In the comments, Redditor plantlife linked a captioned version reading ‘Gersberms / Mah fravrit berks.’ A separate ‘BERKS!’ submission carried the macro to Reddit’s front page and collected more than 17,000 upvotes in roughly two weeks. The joke worked because the face, books and invented spelling all communicated the same emotion before a reader had to decode the words.

Spread

Within a day the macro moved to FunnyJunk and Memebase; forums then began replying in the same deliberately mangled dialect. By June 2012, the Berks page on Quickmeme reportedly held more than 4,200 submissions, while Ermahgerd had overtaken Berks as the reusable name. The format no longer required books: any object of intense excitement could complete ‘Ermahgerd, X.’

Animal remixes made that portability obvious. A pug staring at Milk-Bone treats became ‘Er’m a perg / merlkbehrns,’ and related cat and puppy versions spread through Canvas and Tumblr. Pleated Jeans’ animal set recorded more than 67,000 Tumblr notes in two days, helping turn a single portrait into a flexible spelling system.

The meme also escaped its original moment. During Hurricane Irma in 2017, boarded-up homes labeled ‘Irma Gerd’ revived the pun in news coverage. Goldenberger initially found the exposure surreal and invasive, especially when strangers tried to identify her, but later interviews show her treating the meme with humor while remaining outside the influencer circuit. The lasting artifact is both the face and a compact internet dialect for enthusiasm.
