Merry Chrysler

Origin

“Merry Chrysler” is the closing line of a Vine in which Christine Sydelko intentionally mispronounces “Merry Christmas”; the phrase later became a humorous alternative Christmas greeting.

A Merry Chrysler video still shows a person in a pale headband close to the camera, with another person standing behind them indoors.

Know Your Meme identifies Sydelko as the performer who uploaded the Vine; the available account does not identify who filmed it.

Know Your Meme dates Sydelko’s Vine upload to November 18, 2015, the earliest public use of the work reported in these sources.

Spread

Know Your Meme reports that @viralvines retweeted the Vine on December 16, 2015. The account’s post metadata independently records that date and the text “Happy Christmas” followed by a link.

A YouTube listing titled “Merry Christmas Vine” was published on December 26, 2015, and its description credits Christine Sydelko.

Know Your Meme reports that people used “Merry Chrysler” on Christmas-themed posts in the following two Christmas seasons, including an Imgur selfie titled “Merry Chrysler,” which it dates to December 25, 2016. The archived Imgur page names specialsnowflake3 as the uploader.

Know Your Meme also records a December 25, 2016 /r/OutOfTheLoop thread asking why people said “Merry Chrysler.”

The phrase also appeared on Redbubble merchandise: Know Your Meme’s gallery records include a sticker, a unisex shirt, and a long tee, each listed as sourced from Redbubble and uploaded to the gallery by Adam on December 26, 2017.

Why It Works

The joke replaces the expected Christmas greeting with the incongruous “Merry Chrysler” as the Vine’s closing line. Later greeting and caption uses repeat that altered phrase as the reference.
