Ohio

The Ohio meme treats an famously ordinary Midwestern state as the center of a supernatural conspiracy. Its best-supported starting point is a Chicago transit display that read “Ohio will be eliminated,” referring to the removal of a bus stop on Ohio Street rather than the state.

The photo was already being joked about on Reddit and in Chicago media before Tumblr account screenshotsofdespair posted it on August 6, 2016. That absurdly threatening wording launched the “Ohio vs. the World” idea and is the earliest supported first-seen date.

Over the next few years, map edits imagined Ohio annexing the United States. Around 2019, an astronaut variation—“Wait, it's all Ohio? Always has been”—merged the state joke with the Always Has Been template and gave it a reusable conspiracy ending.

TikTok changed the premise in August 2022. Creators captioned CGI monsters, disasters and uncanny clips with “can't even X in Ohio” or “Only in Ohio,” often using Lil B's “Swag Like Ohio.” The state was no longer conquering the world; it was a horror sandbox where ordinary tasks fail.

By 2023 and 2024, “Ohio” itself became Gen Alpha slang for weird, bad or cringe and combined with words such as rizz, sigma and skibidi. The joke's longevity comes from mutation: one place-name can label any new piece of chaos.

Ohio is recognizable but culturally coded as normal, so the gap between a boring baseline and apocalyptic footage does most of the work. The caption can stay short because the audience supplies the fake lore.

Use “Only in Ohio” for bizarre footage, broken-looking places or impossible behavior; use “Ohio” alone as an exaggerated synonym for weird or cursed.
