Leonardo DiCaprio Toast comes from Baz Luhrmann's 2013 film The Great Gatsby. As Jay Gatsby makes his grand entrance at a packed party, he lifts a coupe glass toward Nick Carraway—and directly toward the camera—with fireworks behind him.

Warner Bros. revealed the shot in the film's second trailer on December 20, 2012. The earliest supported meme use is May 13, 2013, when Tumblr users circulated Gatsby GIFs and the film's official Tumblr posted the same toast with “Can't repeat the past? Why of course you can!”

The frame matched Fergie's Gatsby soundtrack song “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody,” so it moved easily between GIF sets, celebratory replies and quoted lines from the novel. By June, BuzzFeed was ranking DiCaprio's glass-raising scenes; in July, Meme Generator turned the still into a caption template.

The image outlived the film's release cycle because it works without dialogue. It returns for New Year posts, wins, promotions and deliberately smug congratulations, while other DiCaprio drinking shots—from Django Unchained and The Wolf of Wall Street—formed a wider family of Leo reaction images.

The raised glass says “cheers,” but the controlled smile can read as warm, knowing or sarcastic. Fireworks and formalwear make even a tiny victory look absurdly expensive.
